Four Colonels and a Retirement Celebration

Colonel Tom Ahern, Colonel Peter Marron, Colonel Brian Monahan and Colonel Eugene Smyth, all members of the 52 Cadet Class, joined the Defence Forces in November 1975. They retire during the months of February and March 2018 having each completed over 42 years’ service.

As a mark of appreciation, and in recognition of their long and distinguished service, a retirement celebration buffet lunch will be held at 1500hrs for 1600hrs on Friday 06 April 2018 in the Officers’ Mess, Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines, Dublin.

Members of ARCO who wish to attend, or send messages, should notify the Mess Secretary or Mess Sergeant, Officers’ Mess, Cathal Brugha Barracks via email at: cbbofficersmess@gmail.com or phone via Extn 6460/6355, not later than 1630hrs on Wednesday 28 March 2018.

Col. Paddy McNally RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Colonel Patrick (Paddy) McNally of Skerries, Dublin, on 17th May, 2017 peacefully at St Francis Hospice, Raheny. Husband of the late Maeve; sadly missed by his loving family, children Conor, Ross, Maeve and Aoibheann, grandchildren Darragh, Aislinn, Brigid, Róisin, Patrick, Sorcha, Alex, Bláithin, Ross and Alannah, great-grandson Leo, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and large circle of friends.

Reposing at home Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 8pm. House strictly private on Sunday. Removal Monday to St Patrick’s Church, Skerries, arriving 10.50am for 11am funeral Mass. Burial afterwards in Ardla Cemetery.

Col. Frank Lawless RIP

ARCO extends sympathy to its serving colleagues and to the family of Colonel Frank Lawless, Baroda Court, Newbridge, the Director of Defence Forces Training, who died peacefully at St. James’s Hospital on 7th October 2016. He was the son of the late Sheila and Colonel Frank Senior. He is sadly missed by his loving wife Noreen, children Ciara, Daniel and Anna, his sisters Eithne, Grainne, Finola and Niamh, brothers-in-law, mother-in-law Moll, father-in-law Pat (Scanlon), nephews and nieces, extended family, relatives and friends.

Reposing at his residence from 3 pm until 7 pm on Sunday. Removal on Monday afternoon at 3.15 pm to arrive at St. Conleth’s Parish Church for Mass at 4 pm. Funeral afterwards to St. Conleth’s Cemetery, Newbridge. House private please. Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to Friends of St. James’s Hospital.

Col. Aidan Lernihan RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Colonel Aidan Lernihan, a member of 18 Cadet Class (1944-1946), of Rathfarnham, Dublin. Peacefully, on Friday 25th October 2019 at St. James’s Hospital. Beloved husband of Maureen and much-loved father of Declan, Colm and Una. He will be sadly missed by his family, sisters Frances and Phil, son-in-law Frank, daughter-in-law Annita, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Rest in peace

Reposing at his home on Sunday evening, 27th October, between 5.00 and 8.00 pm. Removal on Monday morning, 28th October, to the Church of the Annunciation, Rathfarnham arriving at 10.50 am for Funeral Mass at 11.00 am followed by cremation at the Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome, Harold’s Cross. Family flowers only please.

Col. Maurice Walsh RIP

ARCO regrets to inform its members of the death of Colonel Maurice Walsh of Ballintemple, Cork and Fermoy. On October 14, 2019, peacefully, at Cork University Hospital. Dearly loved husband of Frances (nee Crotty) and loving father of Fionnuala, Clíona, Shane and Sláine. Sadly missed by his loving wife and family, sister Nancy, brother Sean, sons-in-law Paul, Jim and Paul, daughter-in-law Carmel, grandchildren Oisín, Tiarnán, Rebecca, Caomh, Caoilfhionn, Odhran, Ronan, Alliemay, Amelia and Kaspar, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Maurice joined the Defence Forces as a Cadet with 32 Cadet Class in January 1958 and was appointed a Troop Commander with 1 Motor Squadron at Fitzgerald Camp, Fermoy on commissioning.  He served in staff appointments at Headquarters Southern Command, 3 Brigade Headquarters and 1 Brigade Headquarters.  He commanded 1 Motor Squadron from 1980 to 1983 and 3 Cavalry Squadron from 1984 to 1988.  On promotion to Lieutenant Colonel he served as a Senior Staff Officer in appointments in Southern Command Headquarters and in Training Section at Defence Forces Headquarters.  Promoted to Colonel in 1993 and he was appointed Brigade Commander 4 Brigade, Western Command.  He returned to Cork in 1994 as Brigade Commander 1 Brigade.  He retired in February 1998 as Second-in-Command and Executive Officer Southern Command.

Maurice served overseas with the UN in the Congo on two occasions as a Lieutenant with the Armoured Car Group 37 Infantry Battalion in 1962 and with 2 Armoured Car Squadron in 1963.  He served in Cyprus with the Armoured Car Group 12 Infantry Group in 1969 and in Lebanon in 1979 – 1980 as the Personal Staff Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff Operations with the UNIFIL.  He returned to Lebanon as Officer Commanding the Force Mobile Reserve in 1990 – 1991.  He served in the former Yugoslavia with the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe in 1992 – 1993.

Lying in repose at the Temple Hill Funeral Home, Boreenmanna Road of Jerh. O’Connor Ltd. Removal at 8.30pm on Tuesday evening to St Joseph’s SMA Church, Blackrock Road. Requiem Mass at 2pm on Wednesday. Funeral afterwards to the Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy, Co Cork. Family flowers only, please. Donations, if desired to St Luke’s Home.
