Lt. Col. Tony Carr RIP

ARCOIreland regrets to inform its members of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Anthony (Tony) Carr, Baroda Court, Newbridge, County Kildare, and late of Collon, County Louth. Peacefully, on 16th June 2020, after a long illness, bravely borne with great dignity, in the wonderful care of the nurses and staff of the Park House Nursing Home, Kilcock, County Kildare. Sadly missed by his loving wife Bernie, daughters Siobhan, Vivienne, Edel, grandchildren Catherine, James, Emily, Jack, Josh, Matthew, Sophie and Eve, sons-in-law, brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, Defence Forces colleagues, relatives and friends.

Tony Carr enlisted in the Defence Forces in July 1953 and was awarded a cadetship with 28 Cadet Class in December 1953.  He was commissioned in November 1955 and his first appointment was Troop Commander, 1Armoured Car Squadron, followed by appointments in 4 Motor Squadron, Depot Cavalry, Depot Corps of Engineers, Headquarters 6 Brigade and Depot Military Police Corps. He was Squadron Commander, 1 Tank Squadron, from 1986 to 1989, School Commandant of the Cavalry School in 1989, Officer Commanding Depot Cavalry and Plunkett Barracks from 1989 to 1992, and Executive Officer, Headquarters, 6 Brigade from 1992 to 1993.  He retired in March 1995 as Senior Staff Officer at Headquarters Curragh Command. 

Tony served overseas with the United Nations on three occasions.  He was a Lieutenant with the Armoured Car Group, 36 Infantry Battalion in the Congo, where he was involved in combat operations in Elisabethville in December 1961 during Operation Unokat.  As a Captain he served in Cyprus in 1966 as Technical Stores Officer with the Armoured Car Group, 41 Infantry Battalion.  He commanded Reconnaissance Company, 49 Infantry Battalion, in the Lebanon in 1981.

A private family funeral will be held on Thursday morning at 11am at St. Conleth’s Parish Church, Newbridge, and will be live streamed on the Parish webcam: https://www.newbridgeparish.ie/webcam/
